    Computers for Learning

WASHINGTON -- Vice President Al Gore today (10/24) kicked off the "Computers for Learning" program at a ceremony near the Washington Monument. This program is designed to donate surplus federal computer equipment to schools and educational nonprofits, giving special consideration to those with the greatest need.

"Many times, when the government buys a new computer, the old one goes on a shelf for months or years -- taking up space and costing us money," the Vice President said. "We want it to go right off of the shelf and right into our classrooms -- opening up cyberspace, and helping our students learn. That's what this program will do."

All U.S. schools and educational non-profits serving pre-kindergarten through grade 12 students are eligible to receive equipment through the "Computers for Learning" program. Federal agencies will give highest preference to schools and educational non-profits with the greatest need. Special consideration will be given to schools and educational non-profits located in federal empowerment zones and enterprise communities.

GTE Growth Initiatives for Teachers (GIFT) Program

Through the annual GIFT program, 60 teams consisting of one math and one science teacher from the same school (grades 7-12 only) are awarded a grant of $12,000 to integrate the two subjects in a unique project using technology. Individual GIFT teachers re- ceive $2,500 for professional development activities, and the two-member team receives $7,000 to implement an innova- tive classroom project.

The deadline for application for the 1998 program has passed. However, applications will be sent to any teachers interested in getting a jump on next year's program. Teachers may also request to be added to our mailing list now to receive the 1999 application materials when they become available next fall. Incidentally, applications are not available via electronic transmission. The deadline for the 1999 program has not yet been determined, but it always falls in mid-January.

The GTE Corporation has announced grants totaling $72,000 to 120 math and science teachers selected from 27 states for the 1998-1999 school year. The grants are part of GTE's Growth Initiatives For Teachers (GIFT) program , an effort designed to strengthen math and science education in grades 6-12.

"The GIFT initiative is important to our nation's math and science classrooms for two reasons," said Maureen V. Gorman, vice president of the GTE Foundation. "It significantly boosts teachers' enthusiasm for teaching and also increases student achievement by providing hands-on learning opportunities."

    AOL

Do you have a brilliant idea for using technology in your school but you lack the money to implement it? Could $2,500 to $7,500 cover it? You may very well be interested in a grant program from America Online. The deadline is looming, April 1, but do not despair the application is short as these things go, only five or six pages. You may already have proposed something for another grant that you didn't get and now can recycle that into this application. One of the really nice things about this grant is that the money can be used to purchase teacher time for training. This could be a perfect match for the training you will do in the coming year for your colleagues!
